10 Best Remote Control Helicopters for Kids of 2018

October 31, 2019 By Dominick Sullivan Leave a Comment

Having a remote control helicopter can be a real treat for kids and parents alike. However, no matter how fun, you should find the right one for your child to use depending on their age. When looking for the best remote control helicopters for kids, you need something that they can actually control.

Many RC helicopters can be super tricky for young children to control and navigate. Unlike an RC vehicle, helicopters take a little more patience and practice. Because of this, you have to look at control and maneuverability closely when you are shopping for the best helicopter for your kiddos. It is not only the control that is important. Safety for your child and those around is also important too.

Lastly, if you are going to get a RC helicopter, you might as well purchase a cool looking one. Your kiddo is sure to get a kick out of this because it is no surprise that a helicopter that looks cool will be cool. When we were building our list of the best RC helicopters for children, these were just some of the main components we kept in mind.

10. Joyin Toy RC Helicopter Flying Toy

What we like:

  • Detects objects underneath,
  • Safety propeller,
  • Fun design.

What we don’t like:

  • Short runtime,
  • On/off switch can break,
  • Can lose balance.

Recommendation: We kick off our list of the best remote control helicopters for kids with a cute RC copter that is perfect for beginners. It features a fun shape that kids can enjoy watching as much as flying. Safety is a priority here as the propellers shut off if it hits something, and it even has a sensor underneath to indicate it’s flying too low. The runtime is very short though, and it may lose its balance from time to time.

This helicopter is a great option to go with for younger children because the cute design well not scare them away from the loud noise and unexpected movements of the helicopter. In fact, your little one will have just as much fun watching the helicopter fly if they choose not to actually fly it themselves.

9. Haktoys RC Pink Unicorn Helicopter

What we like:

  • Adequate balance,
  • A number of entertaining effects,
  • Resistant to crashes.

What we don’t like:

  • Hard to fly up from the ground,
  • Rotor has potential to malfunction,
  • Plastic can separate.

Recommendation: A cute helicopter for kids, this is shaped like an adorable unicorn. It can introduce kids into flying in a more relaxed, yet entertaining way. There are cool effects seen in this Pink Unicorn such as lights and music that will always catch a child’s attention. Be aware that it doesn’t startup good off the ground; you may have to hold it in the air and then control it.

8. Marvel Hulk IR Helicopter

What we like:

  • Cool character shape,
  • Action phrases,
  • LED light accents.

What we don’t like:

  • Lacks power,
  • Thin plastic,
  • The motor can make a loud noise.

Recommendation: What a way to get your child interested in flying than with the best remote control helicopters for kids featuring a character they know and love. This Marvel Helicopter features an easy-to-use controller, and the character delivers fun phrases. It doesn’t have that much power to push off though, and it can be a bit noisy. This is still a good starter helicopter to get your child interested.

7. Haktoys Mini 3.5 Channel RC Helicopter

What we like:

  • Ultra-bright LED lights,
  • Good stability,
  • Highly durable.

What we don’t like:

  • Fly time can shorten after continuous charges,
  • Short battery life,
  • Can overheat easily.

Recommendation: Kids will enjoy the bright LED lights emitted from this helicopter. It is a bit on the smaller side, but works well with kids. Has a gyroscope that helps with the stability and maneuverability so even kids as young as four can use it. This Mini Helicopter has a short runtime, however, and one that excessive charging can shorten even further. Take care not to overheat, and this can last a good time.

6. SZJJX Mini Flying RC Ball Crystal Helicopter

What we like:

  • Safe, eco-friendly material,
  • Cool design and sounds,
  • Suspension and collision protected.

What we don’t like:

  • Not the easiest to maneuver,
  • Can get lost outside,
  • Needs to charge often.

Recommendation: The best remote control helicopters for kids are eco-friendly. These copters come with cool lights and sounds; even young children who can’t control one of them can get a kick out of watching. You can use it without a controller as well thanks to the bottom sensor. This mini helicopter doesn’t do well outdoors as the wind can quickly take it away, and it does need a frequent charge to work.

5. GPTOYS G610 Built-in Gyro Infrared Helicopter

What we like:

  • Multi-colored LED lights,
  • Simple to understand remote,
  • Good balance.

What we don’t like:

  • Uninspired turning mechanism,
  • Poor function outdoors,
  • Low-quality charging cable.

Recommendation: This helicopter has a very good balance to it. It’s user-friendly, and with the multi-colored LED lights, kids can enjoy it in the dark. Although it claims to work well outdoors, the infrared ability makes it lose power in direct sunlight and in windy conditions. Indoors, this is a good beginner’s helicopter for kids to try out. 4. Water Shooting 3.5 CH RC Helicopter

What we like:

  • Fun water cannon,
  • Easy for kids to learn and use,
  • Stable, agile turning.

What we don’t like:

  • Battery drains quickly,
  • Not the most durable,
  • Doesn’t hold altitude well.

Recommendation: For the kid who loves going after someone with water, this Water Shooting Helicopter will keep them busy as long as the helicopter can fly. The battery does drain fast, but it’s easy enough to charge everything back up. Controls are to-the-point to make it easier on children to learn, but watch for crashes as it isn’t that durable.

3. Syma S111G 3.5 Channel RC Helicopter

What we like:

  • 2 flight frequencies,
  • Smooth controls,
  • Fly at least three at once.

What we don’t like:

  • Too slow when moving forward,
  • Battery/motors may not last long,
  • Wheels are of low-quality.

Recommendation: One of the best remote control helicopters for kids who are just starting out, this has 3.5 channels; meaning, you can fly up to three at once if desired. It doesn’t go as fast when moving forward, but the controls are still smooth. It has a gyro, so it is highly responsive and stable. This Syma Helicopter may not have the strongest of wheels (they can break upon landing) but the rest is durable enough.

2. MiluoTech RC Toy Helicopter & Flying Car Drone

What we like:

  • Automatic return,
  • Stable 4-axle gyro,
  • No-head mode.

What we don’t like:

  • Battery life could be longer,
  • Not the most durable build,
  • Bulky controls.

Recommendation: With this MiluoTech device you get a cool no-head mode function for easier controlling. The controls themselves are a bit bulky, and they aren’t user-friendly in the beginning, but they can be learned with time. This will work better for older kids. It doesn’t have a long battery life at all, so charging should be done frequently.

1. Syma S107 3 Channel RC Helicopter with Gyro

What we like:

  • Portable and easy to fly,
  • Three motors for greater functionality,
  • Pivoting rotor blades.

What we don’t like:

  • Short range,
  • Highly sensitive to the wind,
  • Can crash often.

Recommendation: With this 3 channel helicopter, kids will have something light in weight that is easily portable so they can take it anywhere indoors. Outdoors won’t be ideal as it’s extremely sensitive to wind. It does have three motors, two solid and one in the tail rotor, for the better functioning of the engine. Although it’s prone to crashing when you’re learning, the pivoting rotor blades help to prevent lasting damage. This can be bought on sale.
